After her mother's death, Ann decides to become a Silver Sugar master like her mother - a very important job in the Highland countries where there are few masters in this field. Ann goes to the city of Loviston, where the royal family holds the Sugar Festival. To become a Silver Sugar master, she must be the first in these competitions and receive the royal medal. In this world, humans treat fairies like slaves and take one of their wings to control them. Ann reluctantly buys a fairy named Shell to be her personal bodyguard on the way to Loviston. Ann is torn because on the one hand she wants to free Shell, but on the other hand she needs a personal bodyguard on the dangerous roads to the festival.
